hip replacement

Postby mike on Tue Nov 01, 2011 7:34 pm

49 years old. Could no longer pedal a bike this summer. Slower and slower on skis. Visited orthopedist today and the x-ray and Dr. signified it was time for a hip replacement. Anybody on this forum with a replaced hip? I would appreciate talking to someone who has had a replacement and has gone back to skiing/biking/canoe portaging.

Thanks.

I gave ski lessons to someone who was even younger than you and had a hip replacement. He was able to do all the things you mentioned, BWCA canoeing, Mt Biking, even running and skiing. The biggest challenge for him was to get his balance back and strengthen the side of his body that had the surgery. He was concerned about falling on the new hip when skiing so he was a bit timid the first year he skied. A good PT can help you with exercises to improve your balance and strengthen the muscles that you will need to feel confident skiing again.

I will never forget Ron Caple who underwent a hip replacement about 15 years ago and is still skiing. I have wondered if he has a permanent parking place at Snowflake! I am a PT, so in brief, yes, you should be able to return to nearly any non-impact sport/activity as long as you aren't wanting to push end-range motion. At 49, your capsule should heal up well and you should end up with minimal restrictions, however, ensure to work with your surgeon as every hip replacement is different. Yes, do ensure to strengthen that hip as much as you can. Obviously, I recommend working with a therapist even if it is only for a few visits over a long period of time. Good luck!

I appreciate the replies and the good words. At this point I'm looking at the different hip replacement set ups. There is the partial hip replacement, total hip replacement and the different materials: ceramic, ceramic with plastic, metal. Any input here?

38yo male, just received a Birmingham hip resurfacing on my left side. Trying to figure out how to return to classic and skate skiing as well as bicycling and canoe & kayak paddling.
