Benchina and Houck Win 2nd Annual Midnight Run

A record field of 315 entrants set out at Midnight on June 22/23 in the second annual Midnight Sun Midnight Run 5km in Canal Park. The weather cooperated with winds calming to stillness by the start. With the lights of the city reflecting off Lake Superior, the 315 participants had a great time on Duluth's famous Lakewalk.

Mike Benchina of Chisholm and Jen Houck from Wright topped the men's and women's fields.

Benchina, one the Duluth area's top male distance runners outpaced Duluth's and Midnight Sun Running Team's Andre Watt by 18 seconds to win in a time of 15:55.6. Jason Kask of Duluth finished third in 16:55.3.

St. Scholastica distance running standout and Midnight Sun Running Team member, Jen Houck, set a blistering pace winning the women's event by over two minutes with a time of 17:45.9. Houck recently finished 5th in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and 12th at the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 10,000 meters.  Katherine Long of Duluth finished second in a time of 19:58.3, and Staci Gilpin of Duluth finished third in 20:03.4

We would like to thank all the participants and volunteers for another great, unique event. We hope you'll all come back next year, and bring a friend!
