Level 2 Coach Job Description

Adult Level 2 Ski Coach (Level 2)

Reports To: DXC Executive Director

 

Description Summary & Essential Functions

Lead a weekly adult Level 2 cross-country ski class designed for skiers who have basic experience with the sport and are ready to develop greater confidence, efficiency, and technical skill. Create a positive, supportive, and engaging environment that challenges participants while allowing them to progress at their own pace.

 

Plan and lead weekly lessons focused on improving fundamental and intermediate skills in either classic or skate skiing, depending on the session. Instruction may include balance and weight transfer, body position, efficient propulsion, kick and glide, poling technique, cornering, stopping, turning, climbing, descending, pacing, and skiing with greater efficiency and control.

 

Assess participants' abilities and adapt instruction, drills, terrain, and activities to accommodate a range of intermediate skill levels. Provide clear, individualized feedback and coaching that helps skiers understand and improve their technique.

 

Incorporate drills and activities that allow participants to practice skills in a fun and engaging setting while building confidence on varied terrain and in changing snow conditions.

 

Adapt lesson plans and teaching methods based on weather, snow conditions, terrain, and participant’s needs to ensure a safe, productive, and enjoyable learning experience.

 

Help participants develop the skills and confidence necessary to progress beyond beginner-level skiing and participate more fully in DXC programs and community skiing opportunities.

 

Foster a welcoming and inclusive group environment that encourages participants to challenge themselves, learn from one another, and enjoy cross-country skiing.

 

Communicate with participants regarding changes to class location, timing, or content.

 

Be present and prepared for all scheduled class sessions throughout the program season.

 

Experience / Requirements

Must be proficient in both classic and skate skiing and able to clearly demonstrate fundamental and intermediate techniques.

 

Previous experience teaching, coaching, or instructing cross-country skiing required, and a level 100/200 coaching certification with US Ski and Snowboard is preferred. Experience working with adult learners and/or intermediate skiers is highly desirable.

 

Must have the technical knowledge and skiing ability necessary to coach skiers beyond the beginner level and demonstrate appropriate technique on varied terrain.

 

Must be able to assess skier technique, identify areas for improvement, and provide clear, positive, and constructive feedback.

 

Must be able to develop and lead engaging lesson plans that are appropriate for a range of intermediate adult skiers.

 

Must have strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills, with a patient, encouraging, and enthusiastic coaching style.

 

Must be organized, dependable, and comfortable adapting instruction to changing conditions and participant needs.

 

Must be comfortable providing basic guidance regarding ski equipment, ski preparation, and technique-related equipment considerations.

 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to stand on skis for extended periods, ski, walk, reach, bend, and stoop.

 

Must be able to ascend and descend varied terrain and safely navigate uneven or slippery winter conditions on skis.

 

Must be able to demonstrate skiing techniques and skills repeatedly during instruction.

 

Must be able to tolerate cold temperatures, at times below 0°F. Classes may be modified or canceled during extreme weather conditions.

 

Compensation

$80 per session, for 8 weeks of sessions, 1 day per week, starting the first week of January.
